a dog's nose

I brought some sliced beef out of the freezer and put it on a plate on the living room table to thaw for sandwiches for lunch.

Jinks was snoozing by the fire.

In just a few seconds he was up, sniffing excitedly around the table.

Then he started to whimper piteously.

I had to take the beef into the kitchen (after I'd taken a shot!) and close the door.

HOW can a dog smell frozen beef?!

K9s have highly developed smell and hearing. Think unwrapping, swiftly followed by the whiff of meat...the sort of thing that ancient dogs hunted and ate in abundance. Their heritage hasn't changed much more than ours!
