Being on a sugar-free diet, I had the pleasure of sitting watching Ray eat this dessert in a pub in the New Forest earlier in the week!
I was also lucky to meet in the pub a handsome chocolate German pointer called Otto. His owners told me that he is unreliable off lead and sometimes goes 'off on one' and it takes them ages to get him back.
Obviously there is hidden sugar in some food but I don't eat cakes, pastries, puddings. I have found that it's OK to make say, fruit scones, without the sugar and put a spoonful of baking powder in with the SR flour instead. Fruit sugar seems to be OK. It's because I have osteo arthritis.
A google search for sugar, inflammation, osteoarthritis, will bring up some info. I cannot speak for other people but it helps me. If your mother tried it and it helped, I should be interested. I got my dx c2 years ago.
@quietpurplehaze thanks Hazel, I will pass on the information. My mum is almost 90 and was diagnosed many years ago. She has constant pain even with very strong medication.
Wendy, I never would have imagined giving up what I have given up as I had a sweet tooth. I'm not 100% even so, so if I ate sugar I dread to think what I would be like.

The meringues would surely be the sticking point!

I understand and I really would have done in the past. But now, if it's a question of being awake in the night with pain then it's not so hard!

I am very sorry for your mum as constant pain must be very wearing. I can only say what has helped me.
Otto would have been a perfect partner in crime with Jinks.
I didn't think of that but now you mention it, can you imagine them streaking off together somewhere!!
