From my seed pod posted yesterday, a tree peony will, hopefully grow. This shot of one in our garden in April this year shows the leaves, buds and one lovely sunshiny flower.
The tree is nearly 5 feet tall.
Joanne @gardencat successfully identified the seedpod - thanks for participating in my little puzzle!
A small and belated September update for 2024, where I am still, after many years' membership, on 365 Project, also now posting elsewhere but wanting...
I thought of asking Clare, who has developed an interest in gardening, if she would like to germinate the seed indoors in her flat in the spring and then checked and found tree peonies are poisonous to both cats and dogs and she has one of each living with her!
@quietpurplehaze I’m not sure, since I’ve never purposely made the effort to grow one from seed (I do have one that planted itself in my garden) but I think I remember reading that the seeds need a period in rather cold temperatures in order to germinate. What I do know is that they seem to take at least a few years to get to where they are ready to bloom. They are wonderful plants and I’m a little jealous of your yellow one. I have a few plants, one of which was supposed to be yellow, but when it bloomed it turned out to be the faintest of pink. Very pretty but not at all yellow!
I shall have a try to germinate seeds from that pod. In fact we have two tree peonies both about 4 ft tall, seedlings given by a keen gardener friend The flower I posted is yellow with a yellow centre but the other tree has flowers which are also yellow but with an orange centre. The trees grow so close together that for ages I thought it was just one tree. Good luck finding a yellow!
