We've been to my husband's family's cemetary on a mountain top just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is a custom that I was not familiar with until I moved to this area. Once a year, family members come together, place flowers on the grave sites of family members who have passed on. There's a lot of reminiscing and visiting with other distant family members, as well as a brief church service.
In France the FĂȘte des Morts is celebrated 2 November and families often travel long distances to visit the graves of loved ones. The traditional flower of mourning is the chrysanthemum so large pots of these plants are placed on graves this day.
@thewatersphotos No dinners but gospel singing. @homeschoolmom The churches I grew up in and still attend do not do this. I think perhaps they are larger. I really think this decoration day is more for the family than the church, although the pastor from the closest church did attend. Apparently a number of those attending also attend that church. @jamibann Thank you Issi. @sdutoit You're so welcome Sylvia. Thank you for viewing and commenting. @vignouse How interesting. There were people present who had traveled several hours to get there. We live about an hour away from this cemetary. @ziggy77 Thank you Jo. @craftymeg Enjoyed by many around here, Margaret. @pyrrhula Thank you Ferry @fbailey Thank you Felicity.
