Our first day in Rome we had the chance tour the largest ancient amphitheater ever built. The Colosseum, completed in 80 AD, held up to 80,000 spectators for gladiator contests and public spectacles. Earthquakes and stone robbers have taken their toll the impressive structure but it is still the iconic symbol of Ancient Rome. It seems it is perpetually under scaffolding and at present is undergoing extensive renovation to the facade, outer walls and underground spaces.
