In Memoriam

Another shot of the Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial in Runnymede, which commemorates the 20,456 men and women of the Allied Air Forces who lost their lives in World War II and have no known resting place.

Some of the names among those listed include:

Amy Johnson (1903-1941), the pioneering aviator, whose body was never recovered after her plane crashed in the Thames during a flight with the Air Transport Auxiliary;

Noor Inayat Khan (1914-1944), who spied for Britain and was executed at Dachau; and

Esmond Romilly (1918-1941), husband of Jessica Mitford and nephew of Clementine Churchill, his plane was lost over the North Sea.
