Lincoln County War continued from yesterday's photo.
Billy the Kid and the Regulators were deputized by the Lincoln Justice of the Peace. This action angered Lincoln Sheriff Brady, who was an ally of Dolan and Murphy, and he arrested several of the Regulators. They were released and resumed their lawful attempts to arrest the murders of Tunstall. They were able to arrest three of the Sheriff’s posse members, but eventually killed all three on the trip back to Lincoln. The Regulators had a dubious report of an escape attempt.
One month later, Sheriff Brady successfully lobbied the Territorial Governor to overturn the Regulators deputized status making their actions illegal and Brady the only law enforcement in Lincoln County. Billy the Kid and the Regulators ambushed Sheriff Brady on the street in Lincoln killing the Sheriff.
