Lincoln County War continued from yesterday's photo. This is the Torreon occupied by sharpshooters during the battle.
The Battle of Lincoln took place over 4 days. Billy the Kid and the Regulators returned to Lincoln and stayed in various homes in town including the McSweeny residence. Sheriff Peppin lead a faction of Dolan-Murphy men against the Regulators and over three days they fought to a stand still. By the third day, the US Calvary arrived with cannons causing all the Regulators not in the McSweeny home to flee. Billy the Kid lead the remaining Regulators from the McSweeny house. On the 4th day the home was surrounded and set on fire and many were killed fleeing the building. Billy the Kid and the few remaining Regulators fought their way out of the burning building and fled Lincoln.
In the aftermath of the conflict, several of the surviving Regulators left Lincoln and lived within the law. Billy the Kid and the three remaining Regulators continued to live as outlaws. Two months after the battle, the territorial governor appointed Pat Garrity as the new sheriff of Lincoln county, charging him with reducing lawlessness in the area, and setting a crash course with Billy the Kid.
