July 20th. These are some shots from within the Glacier. We went into the glacier through tunnels dug in the ice. There were also some ice sculptures which made the walk more interesting. The walk through these tunnels, with their different lights shining on/through the lice was a great experience, though quite wet as water was continuously dripping on us.
Along the footpath - alternating with flights of steps - down to the valley bottom there were signs showing the level of the glacier on 3 different dates. I was surprised with the speed the glacier is receding especially during these last 20 years – unbelievable. There, the effects of global warming hit me like a bombshell – and yet they still cut these tunnels in the glacier for the sake of tourism. My opinion is that these tunnels help in warming the ice even though in winter the tunnels become solid ice once again.
Thank you very much for looking and for your lovely comments on yesterday’s picture.
