Spotted Thick Knee

...used to be known as Spotted Dikkop. I enjoy these shy and gentle birds and worry that like our tortoises, they are being squeezed out of their habitat in our town as more and more houses are being built. This is one of a nesting pair I saw on a vacant stand today. His mate is sitting just in front of him (not in this shot)
Very nice bird.

@777margo Thanks Margo
@narayani @cottiac They are indeed very well camouflaged, and when we first moved here I never used to see them until they moved. But now that my eyes have learned what to pick out it has become easier. They are nocturnal birds, found in monogamous pairs, and just stand very still in the daytime. If a nest is threatened, one of the pair will sit still on the eggs and the other will run short distances away from the nest to try and attract the threat away.
