Bokkom Laan Fisherman by seacreature

Bokkom Laan Fisherman

It's been cold and grey and drizzly all week so far, but today we woke up to bright sunshine. I had to go out to the apartment to welcome my next holiday visitors for the long weekend, so I took a detour to BokkomLaan afterwards. (More than a detour actually - it is completely in the opposite direction to home or the supermarket!). I have photographed this gentleman before, and today I attempted a conversation with him in my broken Afrikaans. He seemed to appreciate that I wanted to take the time to talk to him and photograph him - but the shadows from his hat in the midday sun weren't ideal. Maybe next time I can ask him to do more than look up from the task at hand.
What a lot of character & warmth in his face.

@islambad Thank you. Yes there is, isn't there. He has never spoken to me before. When I asked him previously if I could take his photo he simply nodded. Maybe he is just shy, or maybe it was my English language that put him off. Today when I attempted to communicate in Afrikaans he seemed to warm up to me. Next time I see him I will make a point of trying to chat in his language. Will be good for me to learn Afrikaans anyway!

@seacreature Good on you - I am hopeless with languages but I did try to at least say thanks & good day in Mexican!

One of the overcast days would have been good for a portrait....something we always look for with our harsh light! Glad you're getting some rain at last!

Great use of light and contrast, well done!

what @narayani says is valid - but equally, people wear peaked caps/ brims/ etc to protect their eyes from the sun - and the curve of the shadow is quite dynamic - I like this

@777margo Thank you
@narayani Thanks Narayani. Yes I totally agree but mostly I am an opportunistic photographer grabbing the moment - and this was one of those moments. I will try "hanging out" at Bokkom Laan on a grey day hoping to catch my newly found "friend" again
@bf2016 Thanks Barbara
@vstrom Thank you so much, Rick
@anniesue Thanks Annie-Sue. - I did try and get him to turn his face a little for me - mostly by use of gestures because my Afrikaans language skills are not up to descriptions yet, but the images looking the other way were just too stiff and posed, and then I was looking into the sun and the buildings behind which didn't work for me. So I preferred this friendlier more natural look from the first image, and I found that I also quite liked the contrast of the shadow after all.

Excellent portrait! I think the shadow adds to the photo because you can really get a feel for the conditions he works in.

@beckyk365 Thanks Becky. To really get a feel for his working environment, I would have to go out to sea.... these guys are out all night in quite small boats. The ocean in which they operate is not like most of the SA coastline because we are in the middle of a huge bay, so it is generally quite calm, but even so, I can't even begin to imagine hauling fishing nets etc. on those boats
