This is Harringworth Viaduct on the Northamptonshire-Rutland border.
Unlike John O'Gaunt Viaduct, this carries a working railway, and we were very lucky to see 2 freight trains cross it while we were these (shots to follow!)
Rebecca and I took a fruitless trip to Fermyn Woods this afternoon to see some Purple Emperor butterflies. We did enjoy a good hike through the woods in search of said butterfly though, yielding Speckled Woods, ringlets and Dragonflies galore.
Then we visited this viaduct in the village of Harringworth. It is on the Corby to Oakham railway. Completed in 1878, it is 1.166km long and has 82 arches measuring 40 feet each.
It was a really hot day, and unfortunately the sky was an overcast milky grey. I will be back when the sky is more interesting!
As you say, a good hike through the woods in any case, despite the lack of butterflies!
I rather like the starkness of the sky depicted here, as it goes well with the straightforward depiction of the viaduct. In fact, I might even have cut off the textured foreground or "removed" the two things showing on the lower left, and only had the bushes along the far left to emphasize the starkness of the sky being reflected in the foreground.
I like this image, especially presented in black and white,
Another super spot well captured, Sean. I love the geography lessons we are getting - really interesting and I should love to see these places for myself.
