Berlin ~ 4 by seanoneill

Berlin ~ 4

On our 2nd day in Berlin it was scorching hot still, but we walked miles.

The East Side Gallery in my opinion, is a site of world heritage. Following the banks of the Spree, For a stretch of 1.3km along Muhlerstrasse, this section of the Berlin Wall was decorated by artists after the fall of the wall. This link articulates what and why far better than I can.

We walked the length of the gallery. Much of it is now in need of restoration, and has been graffitied. I took a lot of pictures, there was a lot to see!

When I went back through my photos, this one struck me.

Such a strong message "He who wants the world to remain as it is doesn't want it to remain at all" yet this couple walked past holding hands without so much as a sideways glance at it. Why? Their very strong shadow shows them holding hands as if they are cocooned in their relationship. Is this why, or do they walk past every day?

Back to the gallery. There is a risk that it will be allowed to crumble, and the land around it will be developed. This in my mind, would be vandalism of the highest order.
This is such a great capture. The wall, the couple, the shadow it all combines to make a powerful image, esp when coupled with your words. Perfect in b and w also. A fav for me.

Really like this Sean, strong contrasts and a great message. Berlin is on my list of cities still yet to be explored!

I have never heard of this, so don't personally know if it should be preserved, but if you say so, it is probably correct. Good street shot.

Another super capture and this is a special memorial - never seen it but have seen it featured on TV. People are strange, Sean, they are often so bound up in themselves and the 'Now', they can't see further! It happens all the time, in so many ways. We have just experienced it in attitudes of social workers etc. to my father-in-law, the most uncomplaining of men, who drove a troop carrier onto the hell of the Dunkirk beaches - but now he is old and infirm, no-one recognises that any more!

@ivan That is sad Ivan. Your father in law will always be a hero to me and I know that my youngest son Ben would love to hear his stories, having just been to the Normandy landing sites earlier this year.

A striking capture, and a compelling narrative. Well stated, visually and textually!
