World War 1 broke out 100 years ago today. By Christmas, a million people had been killed.
It seems that 100 years on, mankind still has lessons to learn. We still kill our fellow man for reasons of religion, political differences and the colour of our skin.
We are on holiday in the North York Moors, so took a trip to the war memorial in Pickering today to pay our respects.
We are now turning off the lights for an hour at 10pm as a show of national remembrance in the UK.
Beautiful to see all these brave names........some of them thought it would be over by Christmas.......we are in candle light here but most of our neighbours have them on! Brings it home when you see those names! Somebodies sons, husbands, brothers.....
I don't think anybody does 'poignant' quite as well as you do Sean.
Just arrived back in the UK this evening and didn't know about the lights but our street is pretty much blacked out.
This makes me think of The Wall, the Vietnam War memorial in D.C. Just seeing a list of names can be more powerful and moving than all the fancy monuments constructed in memory of those who have died.
HI Sean -- good to 'see' you now and then! Hope all is going well. Thanks for the fav today! Lone tree is definitely something I learned to do from you! I'm glad that one of the comments pointed that out -- I should have. This is such a touching photo -- simple in concept but powerful.
@annbo@taffy Thank you both. I hope to start posting pics from my recent holiday in th enext few days. Just playing catch up with work and hosting family at the moment. Love to you both. S
