A second long exposure shot from my course in Brighton.
A few things I am not happy with, but I know what I would do differently so I guess that is progress.
I've had a hectic few days since I got back, organising an event at the kids school yesterday.
Last week marked the first anniversary of Ben's life changing operation, so we have cause for celebration that he is so fit and well one year on. It was a very bittersweet week though, because my cousin Naomi gave birth to a son 4 months premature on Friday, and he only lived for an hour. They are a lovely couple, and had to try so hard for a second child. We are all distraught for them that they had young Rory for the briefest of moments.
Tragic news for your cousins family. Our two were hard fought for kids, we've lost 6 along the way. It's so tough and life changing. But wonderful news Ben is so well and healthy. And your shot, not happy? I love it. It's stark and clear and crisp and inspiring.
Beautiful capture and love the long exposure. So happy to hear that your young son is doing so well and my sincerest condolences on the loss of your cousin's baby. I had similar situation with my sister-in-law. She lost her premature baby boy after 3 weeks. It is such a sad time. So sorry.
@yrhenwr Thanks David. I think I would do a few things. Mainly I would choose my day better, so the sky wasn't so bright. I would also shoot earlier or later in the day so the light wasn't as harsh. To do this I would have to adjust my aperture and exposure to work with the light, so I would expect an exposure time of between 30 and 90 seconds and an aperture of f/11 rather than around 4 minutes at f/36!
Thanks for responding, Sean. Yes, 4 minutes would be too long for me to wait and try so hard not to kick over the tripod that I actually do kick over the tripod! (I find even 30s a bit much!) True this might be more relaxing - and in keeping with the bottom half of the image - if the sky weren't so bright, but maybe it's that contrast that grabs the attention.
Hard to determine which I like more, but leaning to the more recent square crop. Could you use the ND filter in LR to reduce the brightness of the sky?
Well I'm really sorry to hear about your cousin, but happy that all has gone so well for Ben. As you say, something of a roller-coaster week.
And I think this is a fantastic shot. Useful to hear exactly how you did it as well.
I like the clarity of this image and wonder about how best to try reducing the brightness of the sky. Your posting notes and comments give me pause... happy for your family and your son's health, but sorry for the loss of your cousin's child. It must be very difficult... my sympathies.
PS Is it really a year since Ben's operation? Fantastic that it has been such a success. Such a shame when a premature baby doesn't survive; Maybe it's more common than is generally known? But always a tragedy for the family. You seem to have such a close-knit family.

Great photo though...nice shot.
