Lowther Castle. by shirleybankfarm

Lowther Castle.

Lowther Castle is owned by Lowther Estate Trust and leased to Lowther Castle & Gardens Trust. It sits at the heart of a 75,000 acre agricultural estate in Cumbria's Lake District National Park, within a 3,000 acre medieval deer park originally laid out by the Lowther family in the 16th and 17th centuries. This was subsequently remodelled by Capability Brown, Richardson and Webb in the 18th and early 19th centuries for the first and second Earls of Lonsdale. The Lowther family is today maintaining and restoring this listed parkland, whilst still farming the estate. Information taken from the Lowther castle web site. http://www.lowthercastle.org/castle-restoration
Did you go round the garden Shirley? I went for a conference there recently and because they are restoring it they have got the conference room and the stables; the latter is a gift shop. They are letting paying visors into the gardens which they are slowly doing up. One of my colleagues went for a gander as she was early and was ushered out fairly sharpish. I flew over it in a hot air balloon last year and that showed the full scale. Would have been, and hope it will be once again a wonderful building.

What a gorgeous old castle. It will be fantastic when they finish it - if they ever do. Those things must cost a fortune to keep.

I love castles. It always make me wish that I could go exploring. Is this one open to the public?

@rachb @flowerfairyann @pamknowler @milaniet @gijsje @hermann @snowy @cashew @katrinastabback @memoriesbydawn @ingrid_marianna @kimdavis Thank you all for your comments I do appreciate them. @deborah63 @beachdog @evilsockmonkey It is now open to the public but for many years was inaccessible. Much restoration work has been done to stop it falling into any more disrepair. work is still ongoing manly in the gardens I think. It will never be inhabited again. If you follow the link in my description can find more information as to the history of the building. @callymazoo We did intend going round the gardens but it started to rain as we got there and was blowing a gale so we opted to leave it for another day. I have been round the castle and gardens just before they started the restoration, that is why I want to go back and see what they have done.
