Can you see Appleby horse fair?

If you look 3/4 of the way up the picture you can see the spread of the caravans that are at Appleby horse fair. This picture would be taken from appox 7-8 miles away. Hundreds of caravans and hooped horse drawn caravans descend on Appleby every year on the first Thursday of June.

The horse fair is quite a sight to see especially if you are interested in the horses. It is the biggest gathering of Gypsies in Europe and has been held on the same sight for 300 years. We tend to avoid Appleby for the few days it is on because it can take 1 1/2 hours to get into town and then it is so busy. There was a bit of trouble on the hill this year between two rival families but a heavy police presence stopped it getting out of hand.
