I believe that this bird was given the name, "Robin" based on its orangish colored breast similar to the European Robin. However this bird is a member of the Thrush family. We usually start seeing them in February when they return to the area after winter. It seems like whenever we first see them we usually get some rough winter weather to welcome them back. This one was in one of our crabapple trees eating leftover crabapples. I felt sorry for it so I put out an apple for it to eat.
Awesome shot! We have a few that stay here for the winter, but the males return and choose a nesting site - long before the ground has thawed , making food hard to come by. Good for you, putting out fruit for him!
Great shot- I've heard them and think I may have seen one hopping around on the ground in the woods behind the house, but no official sightings yet. Come on Spring!
