Gentrification of a Night Market

This is a picture of the shops the line the sides of the new night market building. This building actually stands on the same ground as the old night market. That building was very old and disgusting and falling apart, and eventually was destroyed by a fire.

To continue to have a night market, an area was opened up in the first floor of a nearby parking garage. This was not large enough however, so the true night market sprung up, on, in, by the various alleys in the neighborhood where the old building was. This is how the night market got it's true identity, a maze of shops and people eating snacks and bargaining for cheap clothing.

Things were not excellent though, as a lot of small stalls on the street were illegal. so occasionally you would see stalls packed up in a hurry and running down the street as the cops came by. Although it seemed that fair warning was always given before these "raids."

One serious problem was the renting of street space. Shops would rent out the area in front of their store, to various stalls. This provided the stalls with a "legal" right to be there, so they didn't have to run from the cops. However over time this tiniest of real estate went up and up in price. Quite a few times vendors I liked moved elsewhere in the market because of the raising prices. This also made the night market larger and larger as people spread out further and further away from the nucleus.

Unfortunately this seemed like a sign of things to come, culminated by this finally completed official night market building built over the grave of the old one that burned down. Talking a quick stroll through it was full of shops that i had never seen in the night market before, no doubt the higher price of rent wasn't affordable to former vendors and shops. Also the surrounding neighborhood seemed a bit sparse. Perhaps vendors were given the option of either moving into the new building or ceasing to exist.
