World's Tallest Advertisement by taiwandaily

World's Tallest Advertisement

Well I don't really know for sure, but as Taipei 101 is the world's third tallest building and one of the top ten tallest structures in the world, I'm taking a stab in the dark that the advertisement you see is the tallest in the world.

Anyway, can you see the "Dior" near the top of the tower? That advertisement space has a bit of a history. It was first used during the New Year's Day fireworks show to give some message, such as "I heart Taiwan." it was then used to show the name of the financial sponsors of the fireworks show each year. Now it seems like each night it has some advertisement. At this time it was Dior, but a few days later I was there and it was Cartier.

Seeing these advertisements makes me think about the people on those floors. Must they leave at night? do those lights blind them? can they even see out? are those floors even occupied? I'm also curious how much it costs to advertise. I do know that during Valentine's day many people pay to have their love put up for display. They will put "Tom hearts Susan" or something like that.

If you are worried about electricity, than you can relax. Taipei 101 is the tallest green building in the world. The design of this building is actually quite impressive. Even though there are hurricanes and earthquakes, the building doesn't really feel it. this is because there is a huge 700 steel ball that is suspended in the top floors, and if the building is being pushed one way, the ball moves the other way, so that the building doesn't feel like it's moving at all. Also from watching a pretty bad TV show about what would happen if their are suddenly no more humans, they hypothesized that without regular upkeep, the building would still stand for 200 years. At which time the huge steel ball would fall down and destroy the building. Although currently the floors below it are able to support double the weight of the steel ball, so if it's suspension cables did happen to break, it shouldn't break through and crush everybody. One last interesting fact, Taipei 101 has the world's fastest elevators.

If you are thinking of planning a trip to Taipei and considering going to the observation deck of Taipei 101, let me tell you that there really is no need. In just my own experience, Taipei seems to have around ten days of clear skies a year. Also there really isn't much to see. Taipei 101 is so big and there really aren't any other buildings in Taipei that come close, so it's more like looking down at the city rather than looking out at the city. Which for me at least, actually seems to make a difference.

I'll leave you with a bonus fun fact. "Tom" and "Susan" are the default names I use in class when I need to use a male and female English name. I use them because when I hear those names, no image of a Tom or Susan comes up. I don't think I've ever met somebody named Tom, and while of course I've met people named Susan, none of them pop into my head when I hear the name Susan.
