The Mos What?

What you see is the fast food chain Mos Burger. It is from Japan, but it doesn't sell Japanese food, it's essentially the Japanese take on Macdonald's. I'm trying to think of some differences, and really their aren't many. They do have a rice burger where bun is replaced by two "buns" made of packed together rice.

Some small differences are that their burgers normally come with chili on them (both the kind that is ground beef sauce a la sloppy joe, and the actual peppers). Also the combo meals have a choice of sides of being either fries, salad, or a piece of fried chicken. This always amuses me as it seems like they are giving you the alternative to go either way. Either healthy with the salad, or give up on life and pray for a heart attack with the fried chicken.

Since this is a Japanese company it follows the Japanese economic model of charging more than the competition in order to give consumers the idea that their product is better than that of their competitors. Since Mos Burger is so much more than other fast food places, many people have the belief that it is healthy fast food. Which tasting the food you can know it's nothing but the poorest quality of "food." Then again knowing just how low the "food" from Macdonald's and other american fast food places are, I'm guessing that Mos Burger is still "better" for you. Then again eating plastic is probably "better" for you.

One reason for the higher price could be that they pay their employees better than their competitors. I personally do not know anybody who has worked there, so this is all speculation. However I do often see adults/people with families, working there in greater number than Macdonald's or Burger King. So I'm guessing that means Mos Burger pays more and/or has better benefits.

As for my personal review? Well If you are craving a burger, go to a burger place. If you really need fast food for some reason, go to Burger King. That being said, out of all of them I go to Mos Burger the most (maybe twice a year) just because it's almost as ubiquitous as Macdonald's and it's either super late (a few are open 24 hours) or I'm in a great hurry, and the person I'm with prefers Mos to Macdonald's.

The one pictured is actually the first Mos Burger I ever went to. I remember I was actually a bit scared, as previously I had tried a Taiwanese version of KFC and it was terrible (then again I'm not a fan of KFC either). After so many years it's always amusing to go back to the places I encountered when I was first here and remember my first impressions of Taiwan and compare them to how I feel now. In Mos Burger's case they haven't changed. My first impression was "wow this is expensive for fast food" and that's still how i feel.
