Priced To Only Take Pictures Of

The deli that yesterday's post was about, also doubles as an import grocery store. They have various things that range from hard to get in Taiwan to impossible to get anywhere other than here. For some reason most of what they sell are various sweets and other snacks. Then the owner will make fun of you when buying something that only a child "should" eat. I've heard her scoff at adults buying candy bars that you can only get in their shop. Once she teased and a little bit judged me for getting some Lucky Charms.

That was the only time I got the Lucky Charms though. It wasn't cause she made fun of me, I actually give her credit for that. It's because the prices there are soooooooooo high. Granted they are importing them, but that's no excuse to charge the super high prices they charge. It's especially unreasonable when some things are almost three times the price of the same thing in a regular supermarket in Taipei.

The one dangerous thing is that they don't keep up with food recalls. I remember seeing two different foods there that had certain batches recalled back in the states, but those tainted goods were still on sale here. I would tell the owners about it but honestly they wouldn't listen. The owners are a special kind of people who just talk at people and don't listen to what people say.

The owners are an old Taiwanese couple who seem to love foreigners. I guess that's why they opened a place like this. Most of their customers are foreigners, either westerners or Japanese. This also makes sense cause it's located in an area that is a popular place for westerners to live, especially those with families. It's also next to the American school, and the Japanese school, which are schools for only americans and japanese respectively. I'll definitely write more on these schools at another time.

As I said the owners love talking to foreigners, so much so, i start to wonder if they have some sort of arrangement. As mentioned yesterday I have been there with many Taiwanese friends, and the owners have never spoken with them, but the other day I went with a foreign friend and the husband couldn't stop talking to her. Telling her racists stories about jewish people (Taiwanese have no idea what racism is), following her around the store to present each item to her, and going so far as to push her to have a special kind of butter on her sandwich even though she told him that she is lactose intolerant.

Afterwards she asked if he is always like that, and I said no that's the first time I ever saw him like that, the only thing like that i've seen there, is how the wife acts towards male foreigners. I'll let you decide what you think is really going between the two of them. But no matter what it is, or how they act, as long as they have quality sandwich meats for sale, they'll have a customer for life. And if something can be worked out in exchange for meats and cheeses, i'd be open to that discussion.
