It's Not All Sunshine and Lollipops

Day 19 - Diamantina Development Rd, NWQ

A very sad sight.
We saw six dead Wedge Tails on the road between Mt Isa and Boulia and given that they were fairly close together, we initially thought that perhaps they were the victims of some bogan wannabe heroes.
However we were assured by the guy who ran the cabins we stayed at in Boulia, that they would have been hit by vehicles. He said that they gorge themselves on roadkill and then have trouble taking off in time. We certainly noticed that they have a tendency to stand guard over their "kills" and stare down approaching vehicles.
He said that when his wife goes to Mt Isa to do the shopping ( it's only a 600+ kms round trip) the time it takes her depends on how often she stops and drags roadkill off the road to try to protect the eagles.
A sad photo, but a really interesting explanation!

Hard to stop the road kill Terry and until that happens it will continue.Nice to hear that the lady cares enough to move road kill off the road.

Sad. I would have thought the same as you. Interesting that weigh themselves down like that. It's great to know that there are many kind people in the world and that time isn't really everything. Great story.

Very sad end for such magnificent birds.

How very sad, and how nice of the kind lady to move the road kill on her "trip" to the shops

This really saddens me Poppo, how freakin hard is it to not see these majestic birds and slow down , been there and it is not hard to drive defensively, they are easily seen. Some idiots have no regard for creatures or humanity towards them. Sorry for the rave :)

Interesting that they feed for so long they find it hard to take off again.

That is terrible! You would think they would learn to move faster.

Sam
Bye bye Mr Eagle!

Very sad sight. And to know it's not from natural causes but from vehicles -- even if secondary in cause -- is even worse.
