Continuing my week . .now 2 weeks . . of birds in our backyard . . and front yard.
A Bush Stone-Curlew stands frozen on our neighbours driveway. These curlews are just about the coolest bird ever.
The Curlews have really been going off at night around the neighbourhood this year and a pair of them have regularly been down on our front footpath.
I had tried on a couple of occasions to photograph them but the camera could never seem to find them in the dark. And after the "flash" had fired a couple of times they became very wary and kept well away from me.
I then had the bright idea of getting Rhoda to hold a flashlight on them so that the camera could see them so the next night they were down on our footpath, we went down and I managed a few shots. Only problem was I had had a few beers and not only had I forgotten to raise the flash, but I couldn't work out why the shutter was open for a second or so each shot. End result was poorly lit blurred shots of the Curlews :-(
They were back again last night and this time I was able to get a couple of successful flash shots of them after I followed them up the hill and they became blocked in on our neighbours driveway.
@ludwigsdiana Yeah Diana. I have mentioned that a few times in comments on your Dikkops and yes they are closely related. The Bush Stone-Curlew is Burhinis grallarius and the Dikkop is Burhinus capensis. It is not related to the European Curlew which is from the genus Numenius
What a beautiful bird, the wing feathers are lovely.
