Am I the only person in Oz who had never seen a Bell Bird?
I have walked through many forests listening to them and looking skyward in search of them but had never managed to catch a glimpse of one.
In the process I have fallen over a cliff or two, stumbled down gullies, tripped over rocks, fallen into creeks and walked into countless trees in my quest for these elusive little birds. All the while, their tink, tink, tinking was ringing in my ears.
The problem with them is they are small, olive green in colour and spend all their time, high up in the canopy of the Eucalyptus forests.
However, on this day up at Mt Nebo in the Brisbane hinterland, I finally managed not only to see one but to get this absolutely brilliant shot. Stunning isn't it. Taken with a 300mm lens and then cropped to within an inch of its life.
@littleconnie I was a bit surprised by that Connie. I assumed that everyone would have heard Bell Birds. However, I just looked them up and their range is a narrow coastal belt from about Fraser Island in the north around to about the Vic/SA border. I never realised their range was so confined. So that explains it and I would now assume that many others from Oz may not have heard it either.
@hermann Grew up in Kingaroy Sally and when the family made the drive to Brisbane, we crossed the Blackbutt Range. At the top of the range there was a pull off with a big sign "Stop and listen to the Bell Birds". And Dad always did and had we would have morning tea listening to them
Well spotted. No you are not the only one. I have never seen one in the wild either. David has photographed them a few times and he even points to where they are when he sees them, but buggered if I can spot them
