Our son and his family are living in Naperville, a city of about 150,000 and about 55kms from Chicago (it's really just a suburb of Chicago).
In a 2010 study assessing cities with populations exceeding 75,000, Naperville was ranked as the wealthiest city in the Midwest and the eleventh wealthiest in the nation. It was ranked among the nation's safest cities by USAToday and Business Insider. Naperville was voted the second-best place to live in the United States by Money magazine in 2006 and it was rated first on the list of best cities for early retirement in 2013 by Kiplinger.
Where Rohan is living is a certainly a beautiful area (that's his truck in the distance, parked in their driveway) and Australian developers and town planners could certainly learn a hell of a lot from what has been achieved in Naperville.
However, despite all these glowing endorsements, the school that Maggie attends still found it necessary to put together a step-by-step guide as to what to do if your child is abducted. :-(
It's very beautiful, and I'd never heard of it before. When I was a child, we had drills in case there was an atomic bomb. When I was a teacher, we had drills for if there were a shooter in the school, as there actually was just this week in a school in New Mexico.
