Now That's a Break

Usually when I am shown something on an X-ray and the doctor says that you can clearly see xyz here, I usually think "You can?" But even I could see the break in this one.

When we went to see Rhoda on the day after the accident and just before the op, there was a large bulge out the back of her arm presumably where the bone was pushing all of the flesh etc out.

See https://365project.org/terryliv/365-year-3/2018-07-23 before reading the following

Sonia's Story:
As soon as the ambulance left to take Rhoda to the chopper, Sonia pedalled off for the villa to collect Rhoda’s list of Meds to take back to the chopper. She didn't want to retrace our steps back up through the markets and then across to the villa so she tried to take as near a direct line through the streets as possible with the inevitable result that she got lost. She was constantly stopping to look at her map and as a result a number of people stopped her and asked her for directions, in French, to wherever they wanted to go. Talk about asking the wrong person at the wrong time. She was still out pedalling around and trying to find her way when she heard the chopper arriving to collect Rhoda.

After a much longer time than should have been the case, she eventually arrived at the villa and quickly raced around and found Mum's list of meds. Then out to the car only to discover that my car was locked and was blocking her in. About this time she heard the chopper take off again so there was obviously no point in rushing around any more.

By now, John and the boys had arrived back home so Sonia put together some stuff she thought Rhoda might need in hospital and then it was all hands on deck to look for the keys to my car so she could shift it - but no luck. Not surprising since I had the keys in my pocket.

Since they couldn't shift my car, the only other option was to move an olive tree (or the low level branches thereof) that was also contributing to her being blocked in. All the while she could hear this police siren going on and off and was wondering if it was the police sending out an SOS for her to come out and find me (pretty good guess as it turned out) so she kept running out to the road to see if she could see what was going on.

In the end it was decided that if the boys all pulled on the lower branches of the olive tree, she may be able to manoeuvre her way out past it. She was in the process of doing a 50 point turn to squeeze out past the tree and my car with all of the boys holding back branches when I walked in the front gate.

And so to the hospital and the trip home:

Sonia and I made the 1+ hour drive to the hospital and after waiting around for ages (there’s a story there too but I’ll leave it alone), we finally got to see Rhoda after she came back from Radiology. She was drugged up to blazes. We left the list of meds with the nursing staff (Rhoda had managed to tell them she was on blood thinners) and were about to leave when a surgeon came in and confirmed that it was a spiral fracture and that she would be having surgery and having a pin inserted as soon as it was deemed safe to do so.

We said our farewells and by the time we got out of the hospital, it was about 9:45pm. I reached up to pull down my glasses when I suddenly remembered that since it was very sunny when we left the villa, I only had my sunnies and I was the driver. I had a manual car and Sonia can’t drive a manual. Holy crap. Fortunately they had daylight saving and the sun didn’t go down until about 9:45 but even so, after about 9:00, the shadows get very long and the sunnies were going to be a real problem.

So off we went back to Il de Re with Sonia’s job to look out for cyclists and pedestrians and at the same time to keep her eye on the sun. The whole drive home consisted of “Faster Dad, faster”. “Cyclists. Slow down dad”. “Faster Dad”. “Cyclists crossing, slow down”. “Faster Dad”. “Shit Dad. What are you doing? Didn’t you see those pedestrians?” and all the while I’m squinting like crazy trying to see through the shadows and all the while the sun is getting lower and lower.

We finally made it back about 10 and just as the last of the sun disappeared below the horizon.

Then I went and had a beer and contemplated what the next day might bring.

Ouch.

Well I think Rhoda has totally outdone Steve for after dinner stories, his episode is quite dull and boring by comparison!

The xray is truly devastating, but the story slapstick!

Terrible break! Your Keystone Cops stories on the other hand, are terrific. I can visualize every scene due to your great ability of wordsmithing! 😊

I'm so glad, that the title of the other pictures says: all better now. What a story,... must have been Murphy's birthday or so. And I must be a terrible person, as while reading your lines about your and Sonia's story I could not stop myself from laughing here and there. I'm sorry for that,... ;-)

Oh my goodness, a really nasty break, I hope Rhoda is comfortable now. Please tell me that Rhoda is a southpaw. :)

Your story is definitely one out of a horror novel!!!!!! That's a hell of a break that Rhoda managed to do! And I agree with Sally @hermann - hope Rhoda is a lefty like me :)

Bloody hell.... that is one hell of break. She must be one strong woman to not have passed out from the pain, and what a good sport to give you such a great story... :)
