Blue Tongues search for food during the warmer parts of the day and feed on a variety of insects, beetles, snails, wildflowers, native fruits and berries.
As luck would have it, after more than a week of wet weather, we are being over run with snails so now that Bluey is out and about, we have started collecting them for him.
I'll bet you can't work out why it is called a Blue Tongue Lizard
@velina Blueys have a rather large body and only short stumpy legs and hence are very slow moving. Probably the reason they eat snails is that it is the only prey they can catch. LOL They are non venomous and only have very small teeth. All of these factors make them very vulnerable to predators.
When threatened, they open their mouth which is pink and display their blue tongue in the hope that the two contrasting colours will frighten off a potential predator. In nature, vivid colours on an animal usually signifies danger to a predator.
@happysnaps Cut the grapes in half Valerie. Took him ages to eat the first one that I gave him whole. He couldn't manoeuvre it around in his mouth.
They also LOVE watermelon, apple, pears, bananas, minced meat. . . . and snails
