The centre well holds water for the plant in dry times. The flower, which is almost insignificant, comes in the centre.

It's amazing how the plants evolve to survive like this. I highly recommend watching the new Cosomos space odyssey series. The second episode covers evolution in plants, and us. It's fascinating.
