On the other end of the spectrum from my shot of Butch is my number one hate bird doing his thing. He dug this hole in about 30 sec while I was watching him.
They dig for two reasons, to get food and to construct their nesting mound.
They build a mound of leaf litter and other organic matter and the female lays her eggs in the mound and then relies on the composting process to provide heat to hatch the eggs.
The mound can be well over a metre in height and 4 metres across. To get that amount of litter, they will drag anything compostable from within the vicinity (50 metres?) of the mound to be heaped up.
@karlow75 Actually Kane, you put them into a pot, and cover the bird with water, throw in a rock and then bring to the boil and boil vigorously. When the rock is tender, you throw away the turkey and eat the rock. Ha Ha Ha
@gigiflower They never nest in our yard but one of our idiot neighbours used to allow them to nest in his excuse for a garden so we do get our share of chicks. Then it is for young and old. Of course all wildlife is protected so we cant do anything to them ;-)
Very interesting info shared on this scrub turkey's behavior. Understandable why you're none too crazy about them. The rock recipe sounds rather interesting. ha ha ha.
