Arrived home from the No Sunset shot and Nanna informed me that the Tawny Frogmouth was back outside. So I went from zero to hero very quickly. I love how you can see right through the lens of the eye on the left on this shot.
We have discovered that he is coming down to eat the beetles that always hatch in the lawn at this time of the year.
Beautiful! What a treat to have this little one as a guest in your yard, and how nice of him to eat up the beetles. Love those eyes; they look bold and fierce but he looks too tiny to honestly be a menace.
@lyndemc@mjalkotzy The Frogmouth is quite a large bird. From Wikipedia "Tawny frogmouths are large, big-headed birds that are 34 – 53 cm long and can weigh up to 670g. They are stocky and compact with rounded wings and short legs. They have wide, heavy olive-grey to blackish bills that are hooked at the tip and topped with distinctive tufts of bristles." I reckon this one was about 45-50cm long.
