One of our resident butcher birds in for a drink. In hot weather, they hold their wings out from their body and seem to shrink in size.
When he arrived, his mouth was wide open and he was panting like a dog. But by the time I got the camera, he had shut it and wouldn't open it again for the dramatic shot.
We keep a small container of water on the kitchen window sill for the butcher birds and the magpies. On hot days like today we put an ice block in the water every so often to keep the water cool for them. Yeah I know . . . .
You do have a regular menagerie, Terry and it's been great to see what comes into your yard on a daily basis! One day I will make it over the pond to see these butcher birds and everything else!
Brilliant close up. I just love butcher birds. We have four who visit at the moment. One with an incredibly noisy baby, whose squawk sounds like a car alarm.
