This is a mature graft from Mr. Roger's garden. It is a particular Japanese Maple whose bark resembles a pine tree grafted to a different Japanese Maple root stock.
I admit I understand very little of how this is accomplished, but it is fascinating to see!
At first, I thought it was some sort of animal foot and ankle. I am not sure what the purpose of grafting the two trees together would be. Like you, I’ll leave it to the experts.
