The James River near Richmond, VA is surprisingly tidal given how far away it is from the Chesapeake Bay. This Great Egret (Ardea alba) was plugging in the mud along the river banks, an area that is frequently under water. Having found nothing for its dinner, it flew off to the deeper channel where its prospects for a full belly were better.
