Way out to sea, at the far reach of my telephoto lens, I was able to see a very large white bird. It had black wingtips. My first impression was a wood stork, but the shape wasn't right and we're too far north. Then it suddenly plunged into the water like a pelican, so I thought maybe it was a white pelican, but as it turns out, they are even less likely to be hereabouts.
It wasn't until I got home and processed the pictures that I discovered I had bagged a life bird, the northern gannet! This is about as close in to shore as they tend to come.
