Gannet by timerskine

Gannet

I went to Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge to get pictures of birds because it's been a while.

Way out to sea, at the far reach of my telephoto lens, I was able to see a very large white bird. It had black wingtips. My first impression was a wood stork, but the shape wasn't right and we're too far north. Then it suddenly plunged into the water like a pelican, so I thought maybe it was a white pelican, but as it turns out, they are even less likely to be hereabouts.

It wasn't until I got home and processed the pictures that I discovered I had bagged a life bird, the northern gannet! This is about as close in to shore as they tend to come.

Of course, this also brings to mind the Monty Python Bookshop sketch.
Cool bird. Hope to see one sometime.
