From the small town of Welch we drove south on Hwy 61 stopping at the city of Red Wing, pop 16,459, located on the Mississippi River. It is named after a Mdewakanton Dakota Chief and is the home of Red Wing Shoes, Riedell Ice and Roller Skates and Red Wing Stoneware. Located in the Driftless Area the landscape has deep river valleys and high bluffs. On the far left one can see the Mississippi, in the middle grain elevators and one of the high bluffs typical of the Driftless Area, on the right a train depot.
