Literally Digging One's Garden
A tufo quarry with a well tended garden inside.
The countryside is pockmarked with quarries. In some cases, people dug out the tufo to build their houses on site, and used the sheltered area to plant fruit trees and occasionally vegetable patches (though the land is not particularly fertile).
