The Miller House by yogiw

The Miller House

Today was our 55th Wilde Adventure! It was Michelle's turn to plan and she planned a good one.

We met at her house where she drove us to Columbus, Indiana. It’s a small town about an hour and a half away known for its amazing architecture. There’s an army base nearby so we started at the municipal airport which has a museum and a restaurant. There was a volunteer, Ray, who had just turned 90 and brought cupcakes to share. Happy birthday, Ray!!

Next, we went at the Columbus Visitors Center where we shopped the gift shop, saw a short movie about the history of our next destination — the Miller House — then took a shuttle to the house for a tour.

The Miller House was designed by Finnish designer Eero Saarinen and was completed in 1957. He worked with Alexander Girard who did the interiors including designing all the textile and carpets (my favorite part) and Dan Kiley who did the landscape design. What a fabulous and interesting tour. We were only allowed to take photos from one area. The rest of the house was off limits for photos including the super cool mid-century modern kitchen.

This photo is of the front entry way. The carpet!! The walls are all marble and there's floor to ceiling windows everywhere. The home featured a round fireplace in the middle of the room which was fab. The Christmas decorations on display were all the Miller family’s. Mrs Miller died in 2011 and the house was turned over to the Indianapolis Museum of Art to preserve it and open it for tours. It was a mid-century modern lover's dream.
