First of all let me say this is not a complaint or a criticism of anyone, but a genuine call for clarification..
I am pleased that Caterina has brought up an important point in her shortlist for the current Scenes of the Road competition that I think needs clarifying. I do agree with Caterina that according to the title of the competition it should be a scene of the road but so often the person setting it writes something, either intentionally or, I think more likely, unintentionally, that implies it can be a scene not of the road but taken from the road. Two common examples I have seen are saying it should be a scene "from" the road and a scene "off" the road. (Sorry caterina, but you did write this in scenes of the road 25!).
So please can we have a consensus on this. For me, as I have said, I agree with caterina that it should be a scene of the road.
@allsop my understanding is that it is supposed to be scenes from the road - as in as you are driving - I think it came from drive by shootings which someone thought was not the best title and thus changed to scenes from the road....not sure though... we should ask @ghost13 Beau who started the challenge
I’m relatively new to 365, but I think I’ve always assumed that the road should form part of the shot. Then again, I do get confused between SOTR and the ‘Street’ theme. Like Andrew, I too would be glad of some clarification.
It's funny, but just this week I was pondering how far the challenge has gone, and how much it's changed, evolved, little by little from each winner who continues the challenge.
To help clarify, here was the original challenge:
"With work, I drive a lot, through different types of areas. Cityscapes, countryside, rural, seaside and countryside. Quite often, I've driven past a scene that catches the eye, and I think, that would make a great photo. But I don't have my camera, or, I don't have time to stop. So I thought this would make a fun challenge:
Capture a scene off the road, of a road, next to a dirt path, of the traffic during your commute, from the platform of a train station, people waiting at a bus stop, out the window of a plane, or the scope of a submarine...etc. Show us something in your travels. Capture something of the world, of life we pass by everyday.
Obviously the disclaimer: DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN HARM'S WAY. Not asking you to pull over on route 78 in New Jersey to take a picture of a cow while Mack trucks scream at you at 80 mph."
Hope this helps.... good luck... see you down the road.......
Thanks for bringing this up. I was just thinking about it as the most recent round went to votes. This challenge has certainly evolved, the early rounds were more "from" the road, recently it has become more "of" the road.
I prefer the "from", personally. " Show us something in your travels. Capture something of the world, of life we pass by everyday.. "
As far as what it should be? I'll defer to the group. But it is probably a good idea to clarify.
How about a vote to clarify what the general way forward should be? Vote for one of these alternatives:
1. Photographs taken FROM the road of a subject off the road.
2. Photographs taken OFF the road of a subject on the road.
3. Photographs taken from EITHER of these alternatives.
Vote by posting the number of your preferred option.
Hopefully there will be a decisive majority!
Voting to end Saturday 24th. October at midnight GMT.
3... although I’ve tended to interpret more as photos taken relating to daily travels which is a bit more open ended... I had thought, fir example, that train platforms during daily commute would meet the definition, as well as shots I might take of the road whilst in a bus, or a car being driven by someone else
@allsop hello and thank you for opening the discussion! Of course the dilemma has come to my mind while choosing the six finalists. If we accept the pictures taken from the road we can end up with a lot of landscapes. Which is not, I believe, in the spirit of the challenge. However, when accepting the definition OFF or OF it is easy to confuse the subject with street photography. In fact many of the pics posted were tagged both for SOTR and street. So probably I will vote for number three but, again, I ‘m a little confused. I will add a few consideration after the winner of this round will be nominated in 24 hours (sorry again for not having established an ending date From the beginning!)
@caterina Hi, I think we are in general agreement. I do think having a lot of landscapes is the danger (but so far it seems I am greatly in the minority being the only one so far voting for anything other than 3). Whatever the result it will be good to clear it up.
the term ön the road"is an idiom, it means ;
Traveling away from one's home or usual place of work, not necessarily on the highways.
In the act of driving to some destination, on the way somewhere, on a journey.
so to my estimation all of the above do qualify! really we can be too pedantic about these things!
I've won and run this a few times as far as I'm concerned they are scenes from your daily commute be it in a car, train, bus, push bike, walking etc etc. Quite a few of my shots had no road in them but a description explaining it was taken on my daily commute. To me it's as simple as that...
I have been unable to participate much in 365 lately so coming late into the discussion.
I think the road should be part of the shot, otherwise, the challenge tends to become another 'Landscape' challenge rather than a challenge unto its' own.

The fact there are so many interpretations is the whole point. Let it be whatever one wants it to be. If the theme is orange, it doesn't mean you have to have an orange in the shot, but of course you could. Life itself is a road....
The title is scenes OF the road - so the road should be in it. Scenes from the road, or on the road would be fair game to see what you see from the road but does not have the road in it necessarily.

I agree we should all be clear going forward.
