My Closed Bottle Gentian is blooming; but these pretty, purple petals never open. It's true! Folds on the flower petals expand like an accordion to prevent ripping when bees squeeze inside for nectar. It’s the large Bumblebees that do most of the pollinating, since they have the strength necessary to force their way in. I love this weird yet wonderful plant in my garden!
Thanks to @jillhempsall for the inspiration to try selective coloring. I thought that using the technique on this image highlighted the unusual shape of the flower.
The attention is definitely drawn to these flower buds. Thanks for sharing the info on their uniqueness. I wasn't aware that there's a flower that does not open but the bees can get inside of. This is my "learned thing" today.
@lyndemc Thank you, Denise! It is really fascinating to watch the big bumblebees work their way in. I've never seen one go completely inside. They go in just far enough to reach the nectar and deposit pollen.
@jgpittenger Thank you, Jane! I've never used selective coloring before, but I was inspired by a fellow 365er. I've learned so much on this wonderful site!
Very nice! This was a good shot to use the sc on. It really brings out the detail on the buds which might have been lost against the green of the leaves. What an interesting plant!
@olivetreeann Thank you for your kind comment and the fav! I love the color of the flowers, and I find their method of pollination to be totally amazing!
