Ships Ahoy! by janetb

Ships Ahoy!

Replicas of Christopher Columbus’ ships, the Niña and the Pinta, sailed into Pittsburgh the day before last and are currently docked between some private boats and The Gateway Clipper Fleet, which offers riverboat cruises on our three rivers year-round. The Niña and Pinta tour together as “sailing museums,” and the public can visit the two boats to learn about the early explorers and how they reached the New World. There’s always something new and fun to do in Pittsburgh!

This area, known as Station Square, is the former station for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad. It’s been converted into one of our city’s popular riverfront districts. Located just across the Monongahela River from downtown Pittsburgh, historic artifacts mingle with dining, entertainment, and specialty shops at this unique destination. The Smithfield Street Bridge, leading from downtown over to Station Square, can be seen on the left. I love its ornate, arched entrances.

I enjoyed my day in the city yesterday!
Super shot.

So beautiful and interesting. I'd love to visit Pittsburgh some day, but no long trips for us as long as my mother still needs us.

Your shots of Pittsburgh always bring back good memories. I would get up there every now and then in my college days (a good friend still lives in Allison Park). I guess I talked so highly of it (it deserves it!) that my son and his wife went there on their honeymoon! Is that the Incline there going up the hillside? How fun to see the Nina and Pinta parked next to river boats!

What a busy riverfront area - I'm really amazed at the wonderful revitalization that has occurred in downtown Pittsburgh in the last - maybe 10-15 years? - I was astounded when I visited there 5 years ago for my 50th college reunion.

@olivetreeann I'm glad you like my Pittsburgh images, Ann! It really is a wonderful city. That isn't the incline that you see in my image; however, it is McArdle Roadway, which leads up Mount Washington to where you can get onto the incline. How nice that your son and his wife honeymooned here. Perhaps you'll be able to visit Pittsburgh again some time and enjoy all it has to offer!
