Mike went at the decorative stone border of the shared bed with a pick-axe to lift the stones out of the muddy mulch washed onto them by a heavy storm. This American Toad startled us when it hopped through the Goldenstar just beside the stones, apparently trying to escape the swinging axe. (Good move.) After watching it for a few minutes, I ran for my camera; and I'm glad I did. The photo captured the golden look of the Toad's eyelid — something I never noticed on a Toad before but will be watching for in the future. Amazing.
