Unfortunately this is the demise of many a bike - the River Conservators drag umpteen out of the river every year - shame for the bikes and for the river and especially for anyone daft enough to jump in on top of one. Just along from here I saw a kingfisher drop into the water and catch a fish for the first time since my early morning coxing days 25 years ago. Off to my last photo class tonight - hope to catch up with commenting tomorrow evening.
Such a beautiful picture, so spoilt by people's careless actions. I wonder if the ones they drag out get reconditioned? You'd think they were cheap by the way they get cast aside.
I suppose by the law of averages with the amount of bikes in the Cambridge area you are bound to get more sad sights like these ! It does make a good picture though with the reflection and the pink flowers it is quite pretty ! Enjoy your last class, I hope it was worth it, has been a lot of longer than mine !! It will have taken considerable will power to keep going !!!
@Cherrill@snowy@jannaellen@mjkeator@happypat Thanks for your comments - the bikes that get chucked in are stolen - usually on the way home after a few pints when apparently it becomes hilarious to chuck bikes in the river. You're right Pat it's all to do with numbers I think and Cherrill I think they do get passed on to various people to do up or rescue parts. This one looks pretty good - Adam could do with that saddle!
What a shame they do this, strange sight to see. It's a great shot though and the reflections in the water are lovely. We have a large pond not far from where I live and the last time I passed by it someone had put a shopping trolley in there!
amazing reflections in the water, the bike wheel reflection is particularly clear.
It's a sign of Cambridge that it's a bike - other parts of the country it would be a shopping trolley or worse.
Up North..tis supermarket trolleys, that haunt the fish world so many they have to wear crash helmets as they swim in the urban mirth.....but nice capture even with the bike it looks peaceful..you could almost feel as if the rider was sat out of shot smoking a Hamlet from those bygone tv adverts....as for Aflecks you will be pleased to know it has survived the mass renewal of the Northern Quarter..touch and go though they wanted to develop the old building into trendy flats for the up and coming..but the huge out cry from the great unwashed held the sway for now at least....Power to the People gosh and no Chardonnay tonight.
A nice shot nevertheless, it is trollies here for a while but I really feel, year by year my city is looking better as I am sure lots of other places as well. The message is getting through. Great you spotted the kingfisher, I saw one fish once, but it moved too fast and I was too stunned to lift the camera anyway LOL
@judithg I know, more time and patience than I possess, although I was speaking to a guy in a camera shop about a macro lense and he told me that lots of photographers!!! have tricks and he told me to catch butterflies etc, put them into the fridge and then put them back on the flowers and get the shot. I was horrified and it showed as he quickly said that this is something he would never do!!
It's a pretty scene even with the bike. I can never understand why anyone would dump a bike in that way. I've always had a bond with my bikes and not counting the pollution aspect, could never do such a thing to something I owned even if it was worn out.

Excellent image though , I bet you wish you'd captured the kingfisher swooping !!!
