The Great Gate at Trinity College. Trinity is the largest of the Cambridge Colleges and is also the most aristocratic with five Kings and Princes having studied there, most recently Prince Charles (who was admitted with a B and a C in his 2 A' levels ;0). It still has the lowest number of state school undergraduates and there is noticeable affluence amongst many of its student body. Six former Prime Ministers were students at Trinity and they have many famous alumnae. On the up side their porters are extremely nice and helpful! The college is undergoing building work at the moment and the right hand side of the gate is actually a painted wooden 'mock up' not the real thing. For most of the summer the gates have been removed entirely giving a view of the beautiful Great Court beyond (sadly they put up a wooden fance which put the mockers on nice photos). Henry VIII is holding a chair leg in his right hand - the original sword having been removed as a prank many years ago.
I love his colourful umbrella :)! I must have done something wrong because the porters of Trinity were never particularly nice to me - the nicest ones were definitely from St. John's ;)!
Judith , how on earth did you get that man to stand in front of that blue door with that wonderful umbrella ... a shot to die for !!! is it Nigel ??? Interesting info & wonderful carved historic door !!
@happypat LOL!! There's always a porter out there but not with an umbrella and not usually without other extraneous people around! I have to admit I whipped my camera out pretty quickly when I saw that umbrella.
Love this. The detailing, windows and colours of this facade are great. Really funny that the porter and Henry VIII are standing in almost the same position and stance!
My college! I am proud to say that I went there having been to a state school. Brilliant photo. Brings back great memories. My room in my first year was almost opposite the gate - half above Heffers and half above Heffers Sound.
@cgould Although we should be rivals I always have a soft spot for Trinity because they told me if St John's hadn't given me a scholarship for my PhD they would have - nice that they went to the trouble of saying so. Though obviously John's has better food, buildings and rowers!! I'll go & find your room now! I have a pic planned nearby for All Saint's Day!
