A window of St Edward King and Martyr. Right in the bustling heart of the city near the market and next to the Arts Theatre there is a quiet corner which is home to the church of St Edward King and Martyr. In 1525 the first sermon of the English Reformation took place here and it has become known as the 'Cradle of the Reformation'. According to Wikipedia, 'At the Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve 1525, one of the group, Robert Barnes, gave what is believed to be the first openly evangelical sermon in any English church, and accused the Catholic Church of heresy.' That must have been a dramatic night for this little church and it leads neatly into Guy Fawkes's plot 80 years later.... These days it 'specialises' in meditation and meditative worship and every other Tuesday they hold a 'Goth Eucharist' with contemporary music and challenging themes - very popular with students.
PS My choice of title was made before I read its history - it isn't a political comment ;0) !!
lovely textures in that shot - and those lamps are very familiar - we've got one outside the church here, and I was took a shot of one just like that outside Chelmsford Cathedral on Thursday
