I'm not sure why I like this photo because the composition isn't great and it isn't of very much really but it was 'blue hour' and I quite like the contrast in colourings along the stone work. I went to see Sir Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England and former Fellow of St John's give a talk this evening. Thinking it would be a good opportunity to wander through the college after dark, I went a bit early with my new Gorillapod (tripods not allowed - I wasn't sure what they'd think of a Gorillapod). I was really disappointed with some of the shots under the cloisters but I didn't have time to fiddle around as I rapidly realised that the hordes of people walking past me were heading to the talk as well. It was packed out and with good reason - he gave an excellent clear, concise talk about the causes of the global financial crisis. It was really interesting to get the inside view and I wish there could have been lots more questions because every one was enlightening. Some of them were quite technical but every time the answers were understandable to a completely non-expert like myself. There was an announcement at the beginning that it was a private talk and therefore we shouldn't disclose what was said although that didn't convince Sir Mervyn to say anything controversial - and I don't think I'll get in trouble for saying that he doesn't know how things are going to end up!
It made up for my contributing to Cambridge City Coucil coffers by getting a parking ticket this morning, 'Sorry madam you're 4 minutes in excess of the time.' Dammit...
I like this too. I love how the arched doorway shows the lit up (or reflecting light) windows. Is the gutter a head of a crowned king or prince? And is that a boot scraper underneath there, in the light? This is a great photo...so much to see and figure out....
@espyetta The windows are lit up and yes it is a boot scraper - I don't know who the handsome chap is - and I hadn't paid him any attention to him until I saw this photo - I couldn't crop him out!
The photo just has an appeal. I think it'd the arch, the way the light shines and the boot scraper is just one of those so simple but little things that add to the picture.
I love the shot, but I am not exactly sure why I like it. It leads us onwards on a journey of discovery through the archway to an unknown place that is yet to be discovered and explored.
The blue tones are really cool and I like the framing on the right. Sounds like a really cool talk - I'd love to have someone explain the crisis to me, too ;). Just saw that your "Blue Morning" shot is top2 of the week - awesome!
I was just writing how I liked this photo specially the boot scraper & the computer went off !!! Lovely blue buildings & I like the view through the arch !! I would have been interested to hear Sir Mervyn King as I never thought he came up to 'steady Eddie'' & perhaps should have foreseen some of these banking problems looming !! It would have been good to hear his thoughts on the financial situation !
I like the archway in this - it may feel more balanced if you cropped out the left hand side so the angle iof that wall doesn't draw your eye away from the framing arch...great lines though - love shots like this
great colours and archway - nice framing of the building beyond. I quite like the way the composition rules are being broken by this because it gives you a bit of inside and outside courtyard feel. Congratulations on the top 20 theme
@fueast@happypat It was interesting because he said the different country leaders kept saying that the enormous trade deficits between Europe & the US and China/Russia/India were unsustainable but they were so busy focussing on unemployment/inflation/growth looking good that they didn't look elsewhere for disaster looming.
