I went to the Fenland Country Show with Monty today. It's a bit too much hunting, shooting, fishing and not enough bulls, pigs and funny-shaped vegetables to be really up my street but they had lots of nice labradors jumping in the river to collect 'ducks' and Monty tested himself out for the Rio Olympics http://365project.org/judithg/extras/2012-08-25 . This threshing machine was connected to a magnificent steam engine which turned the big rubber bands and also to another farm machine that did other threshery type things. Very interesting ... and pink.
Three good things:
1.We got back in the car just as the first massive rain drops started to fall.
2. I was worrying about Rachel being struck by lightening when she called me to say she'd cut her hand on a punt pole and could I pick her up. Hurrah - she was safely with her mum when the lightening really got going.
3. The magnificent NHS cleaned up her hand, steri-stripped it together and sent us home with antibiotics in under an hour. No forms, no insurance, no charge - as a nation we are truly blessed.
I'm worried that my positives have hidden negatives!!
A lovely positive pink (?) and red machine shot. I think positives are always subject to hidden negatives and, even more interestingly, perhaps vice versa?! NHS - yes, gets all the flack and not enough true appreciation.
Lovely positives out of those could be negatives & aren't they the best positives?
This is an old farming name Judith I haven't seen for years. All our old threshing equipment was made by Ransomes, thank you for reminding me! Lovely pink colours & all those belts & wheels, a nightmare for health & safety.
@happypat I was thinking about your Harry while wandering among the vintage tractors - there were some beauties - I may post a couple if I can get rid of extraneous background stuff!
Back in the good old days ,I had 2yrs working on a farm in Derbyshire before going to agriculture collage. It was a very old fashioned farm they had a threshing machine similar to this one, I had a horrible job of bagging up the chaff
My husband and I gawked at these at our fair last week (albeit, not PINK!), and marveled at how horrendous the injuries could have been from these (which would TOTALLY be banned from the workplace these days!). And here the insurance forms would take three days!
Very cool hunk of belts and gears and such ~ and pink no less! We've come a long way in the evolution of machinery...I'm grateful for mechanical types that have led the progression. If it had been up to me, I'd still be trying to get a fire started. :)
So glad that Rachel's hand is on the mend!
positives are all about turning negatives on their head I think. I like the positives bit on your photos, makes me think of what has been positive in my days.
