The building on the right in the foreground is the old School of Divinity. It has been under hoardings and scaffolding undergoing major renovation/conversion work for years and was finally unveiled last week. The builders have done a brilliant job (despite finding 400 skeletons when they excavated the basement) and the area in front is now opened up and very lovely. I'm hoping they will do a tour for local residents so I can see inside properly instead of peering through the windows. This shot looked great tone-mapped but the program has started putting watermarks on my photos so I may have to invest in the real thing. Apologies for my absence last night - complete inspiration/motivation failure and I spent the evening tacking a collar into the wrong position in a little dress I'm making :0(
Three good things:
1. A lovely bit of Cambridge has been returned to us.
2. Adam used his new birthday hockey stick and they won 7-1.
3. Reading with my enthusiastic little Reading Partner again tomorrow.
@busylady A Yr 2 desperate to get on to chapter books but currently about 4 levels away. Very keen so I think there should be rapid progress and I hope we can get close by the end of the 10 weeks.
@busylady Thanks - tempting to bring it round!! Well my mum has told me I need to tack properly - so I did but managed to get the collar a cm off central - luckily I haven't machined it in!! Im paying the price for not tacking the main part. The trouble is that the instructions are vague and I decided to line the bodice which has complicated things even more! The material wasn't expensive so I'm learning a lot before I invest in something more expensive - and maybe a new pattern!
Looks like a lovely building, especially in the sunshine! Making a dress sounds like a massive challenge, good for you. I hope your little reader comes on leaps and bounds to get onto those all important chapter books :)
@maggiemae The skeletons had a lot to do with it - turned into a major archaeological project. It was the site of a Medieval hospital so they are being studied for causes of death etc and then will be given another proper burial.
The colours of the brickwork, the shadows and dappled light, the colours make this a lovely shot, you can almost feel the warmth of the brick walls in the sun.
Lovely buildings and the colour of the brickwork is so mellow. I like the view through the archway in the background. (I have known that feeling of getting something the wrong way round when sewing!)
Oh you have started your reading already & he/she is enthusiastic, that is half your battle!! How rewarding! The sewing machine is busy too, I don't know how you fit it all in ! Beautiful restored old building is a picture & there seem to be a great standing crowd looking at the new renovations. You even have the bicycle!!! The hockey stick is being wielded well!!
@peterdegraaff There was a Medieval hospital there 400 years ago - obviously not a very successful one as there was also a huge burial ground. They are being studied to discover causes of death (no doubt some nasty diseases but probably not plague as they were buried under the common ground further out). Quite a few of the builders were a bit freaked out but it must have been a really interesting job if you didn't mind ghosts!
Judith , the lighting, the tree, the architecture (especially the tower bit along the top), give this a 'moorish' feeling ..i like the dappled light too :)
@phil_howcroft I know - it's rather falling over isn't it? Must check my focal length - and check that it isn't the building - it does have little markers all over it which Ii know from our extension are to check that the building isn't moving (presumably left over from excavating the basement).
Such a magnificent structure with the quintessential Cambridge bike. Gorgeous composition! I believe I remember the story of the unfortunate patients who didn't make it out of the medieval hospital alive and were buried on the spot from one of your posts some time ago. Still creeps me out. :)
watch out for your converging verticals
