I took Monty off in search of 'roadscapes' today - into the normal parts of Cambridge where the buildings are less than 500 years old. As I passed the very expensive new flats that are being built by the river (and a very busy road in some cases ie here) all the workmen seemed to be leaning on balconies or spades for a temporary breather. I chickened out of photographing most of them but these two waved their spades at me (in a friendly way - I waved back!) and looked very happy about their new-found fame. I was going for B&W as it's such a busy scene but Nigel told me to stick with colour. I never promised to 'obey' but on this occasion I have!
Three good things:
1. Several people looking pleased to be photographed.
2. Several slightly bizarre shots (one to come in Extras to come later)
3. Karate starts back tomorrow so Nigel and Rachel will stop prowling around desperate to get back to it.
You can see the grins if you view large!
I agree with NIgel - definitely best in colour. You were lucky to find friendly workmen. I wanted to photograph two chaps sitting outside the changing room in M&S waiting for their ladies - love the expression on men's faces when they are doing that! But I was too chicken to even ask.
@fueast I just know if I ever get round to doing a 2013 book I'll be thinking - 'what was this about?' - I'm doing it with Jan 2012 at the moment - a bit depressing!
@fueast Apparently not - I was doing a lot of moaning about grey weather- not much changed then. I think Feb was frostier - though I bet you found some lovely chilly sheep in Jan as well.
What a cool scene - I like the business of it. I have to admit grudgingly that Nigel was right. Grudgingly because girls have to stick together, not because I think little of Nigel ;)).
A great scene! From your photos today, you seem to have been stalking workmen..............and nothing wrong with that!! It is interesting looking back on the January's past pictures.
I envy your outings with Monty. Being stuck at work all day is a total drag. Nice shot of men with shovels. You need to take a pic of these buildings when all finished.
So THAT's where our state workers have gone to! Off in shirtsleeves leaning on their shovels. Glad you kept the color, it adds to the chaotic aspect of construction.
Judith, Nigel is right , colour works really well here, lots of complimentary colours working well together...I see the smiles :) :) ...........not much privacy on those balconies when you are having a nice glass of wine on a summers evening !!!
@meisen325 I managed to blag a tour round the one bed & studio (ALL others sold already - that's several multi-million). Very nicely done but at the end of the day an awful lot of money per square foot. Oh you do get a cycle rack!
@meisen325 Oh and I've just got an email from the accountant - the honeymoon is over. I am SO behind with everything. But I'm ignoring it till Rachel goes back to university at the weekend ( :0( ) and Adam goes back to school.
What is it with workmen that they never, ever appear to be doing anything other than leaning on their shovels, taking a fag/coffee/lunch break or sitting in their vans listening to the radio...or maybe that's just here! Good to see you got a good response and some smiles. Street photography still freaks me a little, plus I'm rubbish at portraiture in general so well done xx
Wonderful capture! It is interesting to see construction that is not in my way! Most of our construction at the moment is on the roadways, always in the way.
