Geometry

Bombed around this morning having persuaded Adam to go to London with me to 'do some galleries'. Got home to discover that he'd done some research and not found anything he desperately wanted to do. So I searched for local exhibitions and we went and checked some of those out instead. He has left me in a state of trauma by not liking 'Kettle's Yard House'. I told him his sense of taste needs to mature - he didn't agree! Anyway it would at least have been a cheap day out if I hadn't bought a nifty fifty in the local camera shop. I paid a bit over the odds (in exchange for a free filter) but I would hate for all of the 'physical' camera shops to disappear. And he reckons my kit lens is just cold! I know this isn't what 50mm lenses are all about but King's College gate is just across the road from the shop and I wanted to try it out.
Four good things:
1. A new toy
2. Half term only lasts one week
3. Pancake Day
4. @fannyb has fixed her dryer!
PS Best large on black for all the details King's squeezed into its entrance.
Such a lot of detail and interest here. Perfect composition.

You missed out the price... This does bring the foregound to your attention. I guess you can do what you like with your lense!
February 12th, 2013
@fueast I had to because you'll all laugh at me for not going t'internet.
February 12th, 2013
@judithg Not really although I do hope you bargained.

I continue to be in awe of the architecture that is part of your everyday world! LOVE the door in the foreground and what an awesome perspective! We have no camera shops anymore, and I would love to hold a camera, see how it feels in my hands, etc. before purchasing... be able to compare the 2 or 3 I have narrowed it down to. May check out some larger cities that are within a 2 hour drive and see if I can find one! And good for you... have fun with that new toy!

I had to google Kettles Yard House as I thought it had something to do with Kettles Crisps specially when you mentioned taste!!!! Instead a beautiful art house...oh dear Adam but he is not really at the art gallery age yet so be patient Judith!
A nifty fifty, well you deserve it after saving all that money on repairs!!!
Beautiful detail of the fabulous carving on the door, a door within a door!!
February 12th, 2013
No we won't.I agree otherwise there won't be any 'real' shops left....I actually bought a real book the other day from a real shop!!! Oh dear children!!!!! Love your 4 good things and no. 4 is thanks to your inspiration!! and lovely shot, enjoy your nifty fifty!!
February 12th, 2013
@fueast Yes I did - I think I should have tried a bit harder and may be gone in with the John Lewis price but the filter is a nice one and I would have had to fork out for one otherwise.

@calm We are very lucky - and though the town keeps expanding outwards (not often attractively) the centre stays the same, protected by the colleges for the most part (other than some disasters in the 60's and 70's) very well.

Interesting shot, Having a fixed 50mm lens can push you into looking for new perspectives & this really works.
February 12th, 2013
@judithg Hope the historic areas always stay intact... you are blessed!

@happypat It's a bit annoying because you're not allowed to put any photos from there on the internet but otherwise it is a lovely place that I'd like to live in. Adam is very into art but if he doesn't like something he hates it! He likes art that takes a lot of effort and Kettles Yard has lots of lovely simple line work that he really objects too for some reason - I think he would rather have had his tonsils out again!!!! I can never fathom him out - it's quite rare that we both like the same thing and I try to second guess him now and again but I'm never right. We also went to an exhibition of Russian architecture posters and peripherals - a bit disappointing in my view but he was keen.....
February 12th, 2013
@judithg Well good for Adam....I misjudged him completely & he's obviously got his own opinion ....we don't always like the same after all but you can both learn off each other!!! I always have to go on my own, Harry wouldn't be seen dead in an art gallery or museum!
February 12th, 2013
@happypat Well one of these days we WILL be seen dead in a gallery because we drive each other mad after a few hours!!
February 12th, 2013
I really like the composition here - love that you caught light both outside and inside the gate. Great lines and curves. Have fun with that new toy.
February 12th, 2013
Fantastic detail on This beautiful collage, next time we visit Helen we must try and see if we can have a look round Btw its a fav
February 12th, 2013
Super layered image - your new toy works beautifully! Kettle's Yard is one of my fav places but maybe a little too subtle for the young? Oh heavens how patronising can I get??
February 12th, 2013
Love this...so much detail, so much work in the construction and carving!!! It's odd when you think you know your own child and suddenly come up way off the mark...i find it quite funny with Matt!
February 12th, 2013
Lovely detail on the door and so much to see beyond!
February 12th, 2013
We used to visit Kettles Yard regularly back in the dark ages. This is a great shot and very aptly titled.
February 12th, 2013
What a beautifully proportioned stately shot with lots of lovely textures and the feeling of being invited to go somewhere!
February 12th, 2013
@judithg LOL !
February 12th, 2013
I love the composition and the magnificent detail on these fabulous landmarks. Congrats on your nifty 50
February 12th, 2013
Love the lines in this one
February 12th, 2013
@tishpics Apparently too subtle for my young! Actually he did quite like the house which was a bit busy but he was totally unimpressed with the art work and therefore was not prepared to say he liked any of it - such hard work at times!

Jo
Lovely shot a picture of two halfs. I only use a nifty fifty which one did you get?
February 12th, 2013
Such beauitful architecture, enjoy your new lens!
February 12th, 2013
@jo13 The cheaper one!
February 12th, 2013
I love this Judith, not only can we peek in the door, but you have the detail on the closed door as well. I have the nifty fifty and I also got the 'pancake' 40mm and I have to say they are so versatile. you will have great fun with it.
February 12th, 2013
Jo
@judithg That's the one I have and it's a great little lense.
February 12th, 2013
@jo13 Did you take your Jay with it? I'm just trying to get used to the exposure - it seemed to be a bit up and down.
February 12th, 2013
@cookie123 I just need to stop trying to zoom it!
February 12th, 2013
Jo
@judithg Yes I did, I find that I have to be VERY accurate with AF, but otherwise all good.
February 12th, 2013
@judithg LOL I know, keep walking backwards Haha
February 12th, 2013
@cookie123 Yep!!! @jo13 I need a bit of time on my own with it tomorrow I think!
February 12th, 2013
Really interesting perspective in this shot of the entrance to King's.
February 12th, 2013
Love how my eye is guided into the shot.

Lovely Judith you are so fortunate to have these magnificent buildings on your doorstep. I agree best viewed large. The detail on the door is wonderful. My first fav today!

February 12th, 2013
Great composition. Lovely as ever!
February 13th, 2013
Perfect title!
February 13th, 2013
Love the detail in the photo. I often use my 50 mm for landscapes and such. It's the sharpest and best lens I own and it amazes me. You can crop a small detail from a photo and it will still be sharp. You will love your new lens.
February 13th, 2013
This is beautiful, Judith. I love your composition.
February 13th, 2013
Love your composition and POV. So many layers of interest for the eye to explore.
February 13th, 2013
this shot has amazing layering effects you start at the right with one focal point and move to the left and back giving you more and more picture to give us
February 13th, 2013
Fabulous composition! I love the depth, the colors and the contrasts.
February 13th, 2013
Quite a calculus of shapes
February 13th, 2013
I'd say you got your money's worth, whatever the price, with your new lens. What a brilliant shot!! The composition is simply exquisite.
Good for you for buying local! And yea for traditional pancake suppers. :)
February 13th, 2013
great shapes and textures! enjoy your new toy!
February 13th, 2013
Completely agree about camera shops - you are going to have fun with the 50 I love mine! We've got half term next week. Still at the looking forward to it stage at the moment, let's see how I am feeling by Monday evening
February 14th, 2013
