Bombed around this morning having persuaded Adam to go to London with me to 'do some galleries'. Got home to discover that he'd done some research and not found anything he desperately wanted to do. So I searched for local exhibitions and we went and checked some of those out instead. He has left me in a state of trauma by not liking 'Kettle's Yard House'. I told him his sense of taste needs to mature - he didn't agree! Anyway it would at least have been a cheap day out if I hadn't bought a nifty fifty in the local camera shop. I paid a bit over the odds (in exchange for a free filter) but I would hate for all of the 'physical' camera shops to disappear. And he reckons my kit lens is just cold! I know this isn't what 50mm lenses are all about but King's College gate is just across the road from the shop and I wanted to try it out.
Four good things:
1. A new toy
2. Half term only lasts one week
3. Pancake Day
4. @fannyb has fixed her dryer!
PS Best large on black for all the details King's squeezed into its entrance.
I continue to be in awe of the architecture that is part of your everyday world! LOVE the door in the foreground and what an awesome perspective! We have no camera shops anymore, and I would love to hold a camera, see how it feels in my hands, etc. before purchasing... be able to compare the 2 or 3 I have narrowed it down to. May check out some larger cities that are within a 2 hour drive and see if I can find one! And good for you... have fun with that new toy!
I had to google Kettles Yard House as I thought it had something to do with Kettles Crisps specially when you mentioned taste!!!! Instead a beautiful art house...oh dear Adam but he is not really at the art gallery age yet so be patient Judith!
A nifty fifty, well you deserve it after saving all that money on repairs!!!
Beautiful detail of the fabulous carving on the door, a door within a door!!
No we won't.I agree otherwise there won't be any 'real' shops left....I actually bought a real book the other day from a real shop!!! Oh dear children!!!!! Love your 4 good things and no. 4 is thanks to your inspiration!! and lovely shot, enjoy your nifty fifty!!
@fueast Yes I did - I think I should have tried a bit harder and may be gone in with the John Lewis price but the filter is a nice one and I would have had to fork out for one otherwise.
@calm We are very lucky - and though the town keeps expanding outwards (not often attractively) the centre stays the same, protected by the colleges for the most part (other than some disasters in the 60's and 70's) very well.
@happypat It's a bit annoying because you're not allowed to put any photos from there on the internet but otherwise it is a lovely place that I'd like to live in. Adam is very into art but if he doesn't like something he hates it! He likes art that takes a lot of effort and Kettles Yard has lots of lovely simple line work that he really objects too for some reason - I think he would rather have had his tonsils out again!!!! I can never fathom him out - it's quite rare that we both like the same thing and I try to second guess him now and again but I'm never right. We also went to an exhibition of Russian architecture posters and peripherals - a bit disappointing in my view but he was keen.....
@judithg Well good for Adam....I misjudged him completely & he's obviously got his own opinion ....we don't always like the same after all but you can both learn off each other!!! I always have to go on my own, Harry wouldn't be seen dead in an art gallery or museum!
Super layered image - your new toy works beautifully! Kettle's Yard is one of my fav places but maybe a little too subtle for the young? Oh heavens how patronising can I get??
Love this...so much detail, so much work in the construction and carving!!! It's odd when you think you know your own child and suddenly come up way off the mark...i find it quite funny with Matt!
@tishpics Apparently too subtle for my young! Actually he did quite like the house which was a bit busy but he was totally unimpressed with the art work and therefore was not prepared to say he liked any of it - such hard work at times!
I love this Judith, not only can we peek in the door, but you have the detail on the closed door as well. I have the nifty fifty and I also got the 'pancake' 40mm and I have to say they are so versatile. you will have great fun with it.
Lovely Judith you are so fortunate to have these magnificent buildings on your doorstep. I agree best viewed large. The detail on the door is wonderful. My first fav today!
Love the detail in the photo. I often use my 50 mm for landscapes and such. It's the sharpest and best lens I own and it amazes me. You can crop a small detail from a photo and it will still be sharp. You will love your new lens.
this shot has amazing layering effects you start at the right with one focal point and move to the left and back giving you more and more picture to give us
I'd say you got your money's worth, whatever the price, with your new lens. What a brilliant shot!! The composition is simply exquisite.
Good for you for buying local! And yea for traditional pancake suppers. :)
Completely agree about camera shops - you are going to have fun with the 50 I love mine! We've got half term next week. Still at the looking forward to it stage at the moment, let's see how I am feeling by Monday evening
